Ever since I saw Amanda Cox’s 2008 connected scatter plot, “Oil’s roller coaster ride“, I wanted to make one myself. This year Steve Haroz, Robert Kosara, and Steven L. Franconeri wrote a paper discussing the readability and reader engagement for connected scatter plots. They found that connected scatter plots, despite their novelty, engage the reader’s attention to a degree that the traditional presentation (two time series) does not.
- The crime data is from the FBI.
- The unemployment data is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Code for a prototypical connected scatter plot can be found here, on my github account.
